The Coin Jar

June 15th, 2012 at 04:55 pm

So my husband and I started a coin jar a couple of years ago. Since the move, it sits proudly on our breakfast bar....glowing from the shades of silver and copper. I love this jar. Although we take from it sometimes for special laundry mat trips or money for camping showers, it pretty much just continues to grow. It has hundreds of dollars in it and I don't know how I would feel if we ever cashed it in. Its like a savings account that I can't touch. I love my jar.

Hey, did you ever weigh them? Doesn't a jar of coins get heavy!?

Maybe I should weigh it! It is pretty heavy. I say jar, but its really a tall plastic container that used to have snack mix in it. Smile

These days, since the interest rate is so low, might as well keep it in the jar. Smile I'd count it though, and see if you have anything interesting - silver coins...look at them edge on and if the edges are all a silver color (no copper layer) and they are older than 1964 - old coins, etc. I'd keep those in a separate jar.

That leads me to think of my Dad's "magical" coin jar. When we were teenagers, he used to joke that he could fill it full of silver coins... and he had iron clad insurance that he would gradually watch it turn copper colored over a period of weeks. Smile He was a good sport about it, but one of my brothers really milked that thing.
