Produce thoughts

February 17th, 2012 at 04:17 pm

2 things have been on my mind in regards to produce. I know this doesn't sound like a financial issue, but it is. Last weekend at our new house, while walking in the front yard, I discovered turnips. Just right there next to our porch....lots of them. And it got me thinking. 1 - Can I eat these? and 2 - That means the soil must be good for growing...unless turnips are just easy to grow. So potentially I could have a pretty good garden and save money on produce at the store!

The other thing that was brought to our attention is becoming a garlic farmer/producer. It just requires 1 acre of land, but I don't know all the rules and other requirements. I am sure there is insurance and equipment and blah blah blah. But apparently there is some good money it. Maybe I could go from an accountant to a garlic farmer. Smile

Turnips? Can you give us more details? Are they growing or did they just randomly show up? If they are growing, how do you know they are turnips? Aren't they underground? My caffeine shy brain can't even get a visual on this one.But it made me smile!

Yep turnips. Regular old purple and white ones. They are growing like crazy!!! I noticed the leaves and then I saw something sticking out of the ground, so I pulled it up. AND THERE IT WAS!

You'd be surprised that the number of volunteer plants you get if you have a garden for a few years. Turnips are very hardy. As far as garlic is concerned, be prepared for a lot of bending. Maybe not you, but you'll be paying someone to pull them up. And 1 acre doesn't seem like a lot, but stooped over? Might as well be Rhode Island. Big Grin

It's true. Garlic has to be planted, weeded, and harvested by hand. But, it's supposedly easy to grow and has few pests. Maybe plant a test crop first.

Well, heck, if you're going to plant something mainly for the financial benefit, you might as well just go for a more expensive crop, like asparagus, or certain hybrid gourmet varieties, like purple carrots, that people ooh and ah about.

Edamame and Chinese pea pods also seem pretty expensive in the store, but so easy to grow. I'll be growing edamame myself this year.
