Mortgage info and SA Forums

January 10th, 2013 at 07:39 pm

Ok... so 2 unrelated topics but both on the brain today.

First, the mortgage. I found out that our mortgage is going DOWN! So my husband and I talked and have decided to continue to pay extra on it...since we are already used to that amount. It will knock off 10 years! Excited about that.

Now, the forums. Wow! If ever there was somewhere where I felt like I didn't belong...it would be there. I didn't read many. I actually just stumbled into the forum area a couple of days ago. But the ones I read, made me feel like an idiot. Like people were looking down on me because I misuse the term Budget or because I don't buy something because I "can't afford it." As I have said before, I am here to learn and grow. Think I will stick to the blogs. Smile

Online communities can be a bit odd at times. It is hard to tell inflection, sarcasm, and so forth. It happens on the blogs, too...so take it all with a grain of salt.

That is great about the mortgage!

Oh my gosh, I totally agree about the forums! There's something almost hostile about the tone over there to me. ccf is right in that it's hard to tell intention, so maybe it has to do with having more men over there than the female-dominated blogs -- maybe men communicate differently in writing, overall? Or maybe the forums are more rapid-fire, whereas the blogs are a community, where we usually take more time and are more diplomatic. Not that people don't speak frankly -- sometimes harshly -- on the blogs, but to me the tone is WAY different than the forums, where you're almost guaranteed to get someone disagreeing passionately with whatever you write, in what I take to be much more unpleasant, hectoring tones.

I rarely go to the forums. I almost forget they are there. The blogs are much more my speed.

While there is some overlap, there seems to be a whole set of different people on the forums. A lot more attitude over there. Stay here, in the nice blog sunshine!

What is the reason your mortgage payment is going down? Are you refinancing?

The SA forums seem really friendly to me, LOL. I have been posting on MSN Money, and now Not MSN Money, for years. Those forums can be very harsh, but the majority of posters are very well-intentioned.

We are all learning, all the time. No one has any business talking down to you!

I agree. Positive feed back goes alot further than criticism.

LOL Petunia, I guess it's all about perspective. I only have the blogs to compare to; I've never frequented any other online financial places.

Congrats on the mortgage and a great idea on paying the same amount Smile As far as the forum, I too seldom visit but not for the same reason, I just forget about them. I have used in the past and found everyone to be just as helpful as with the blogs but my preference are the blogs.
    Hang in there Smile

I think on the forums they have a lot less...patience, I think is the right word, for dithering. And we do a lot of dithering on the blogs trying to figure out what we are going to do, going back and forth on stuff, thinking out loud. I also think that on the forums more people are where they want to be financially while on the blogs we are still figuring out how to get there or working towards getting there with a few notable exceptions.

I do read the forums but I cherry pick which threads, and I seldom participate unless I have a question I think would get a better answer there than here. And if I do post a reply to something there I find that I am very careful with my wording. It is a very male dominated forum while the blogs are definitely a very female dominated place. I do find some good but blunt advice there, and I also find, on occasion, some very misogynistic opinions. It's definitely not as warm an environment as the blogs usually are. Different personalities.

Male/Female - that is so true! Never thought about it before. (Though I am glad we have some males here to round things out).

Yes, right now the forums are kind of filled with "Things I hate" and "Things that drive me nuts." I didn't even look at them - just not how I want to spend my time - griping about everyone and everything. Very negative lately.

I've enjoyed the forums more in the past. I think lately it hasn't been very active so it is kind of the same handful of people posting the same thing over and over and over. Kind of how it "feels" to me. I don't get the same feel with the blogs. Always new people with different situations. I am sure we also talk about the same things over and over, but I feel like there is a lot more variety in the discussion. A lot less, "Do it my way or DIE!!" LOL.
