Well...our electronics are fried

September 8th, 2014 at 06:59 pm

We had a bad storm on Saturday. Lots of lightning...which hit close to our house. We lost our computer, our vinyl cutter, and modem. The printer survived and luckily my laptop was not plugged in. So far, it should cost about $2300 to replace. Insurance deductible is $1974, so it just doesn't make sense to file a claim. So, we have to come up with $2300 more dollars now. Frown Feeling discouraged. The computer is used for work (for our business) and so is the vinyl cutter. And we were going to use th vinyl cutter to make some extra money. So I'm not sure what to do. We have to have another $200 by the end of this month so we can pay to have the dogs fixed. The computer should be about $500. And we need that as soon as we can do it. And the vinyl cutter is not an emergency, but we do use it for work. So we would like to replace it sooner than later.

I feel guilty for trying to pay off my credit cards now. Should I start putting the extra money towards this problem and extend the debt? I really wanted everything paid off by then end of the month.

Blah

No emergency fund, right? For the most part I agree with the plan to stop extra payment on debt to fund these new items. And I get that they seem important. But do consider if you can rent/borrow/buy used from a friend, relative or online. Try to put the least amount out of pocket.

You might need to lower your deductible on insurance if you don't even have that much in your emergency fund...or get a bigger EF! What if this emergency was a fire caused by lightening to your home?! Where would you get that $2K?

Yep, we need a bigger EF. That was what I posting about the other day. Things keep popping up...."emergencies"....and then I scramble. That is the direction I was working towards with the Suck It Up September, hoping to build on it. $800 in savings will not carry us very far. Case and point - $2k in fried electronics. $800 does not = $2000.

Side note - I didn't know that our insurance was a 1% deductible for everything. Frown I thought personal property would be lower. Maybe $500. I was wrong.

I know you know about the EF, so my apologies if I sounded rude. The good thing is you did learn something about your insurance. You do have some money saved. And you were already telling yourself to 'suck it up' so that will continue as best you can.

I appreciate the reminder about electronics and lightening!!
