Living on Cash

I've read Dave Ramsey's books and I love Gail Vaz Oxlade...so I'm trying to live off of cash. I didn't have any jars, so I set up some plastic cups for my variable expenses. Transportation, Food, Entertainment, Clothing & Gifts, Everything Else - which includes Rx, Pets, and I threw Cleaning supplies into that. BUT I still use my Credit Card and Debit card. YIKES! I have to discipline myself more or this will never work.

I think my first problem is that I have not been putting the amounts I am supposed to in the "jars." I haven't been putting anything in Clothing & Gifts, so when I had to buy a birthday present yesterday, I used my debit card. Frown

So I'm trying to get the hang of this so I can go all out in April. Surely other people out there are living on cash!?@#$

    I have been putting all my expense money in cash, into envelopes, for 46 years. Yes, you read it right, 46 years. It has always worked for me. But you need an envelope for everything, car insurance, house insurance, property tax, tags for cars, xmas and gifts, medical, etc. Write down all of your expenses. I have never used a debit card in my life.

    I use cash for everything expect online bills. I find sometimes I still use my debit but try SO hard not to!! I have an envelope for groceries, misc, clothing, eat out, work out, car, etc lots of envelopes!! Good luck!!

    My sister is doing cash for everything too and she found this really cute wallet where the lady will label each cloth accordian section with whatever you want it to say. So its perfect for those living on cash.

    And I love Til Debt Do Us Part...and I DVR it every week too. Makes me want to be a financial success.

    I to love Gail and her show. I watch every week.

    I was at at friends house recently and she had 7 beautiful jars on her counter in the kitchen. I asked about them and she said they got the idea from Gail.

    She said they use them for 7 of their variable expenses each pay period. I mentioned that I had operated on cash since 2005. She asked what my jars are like and I mentioned I use paper envelopes and a deposit bag, both free from my bank, as my jars.

    Her jaw dropped open and she stared at me. She spent $70 on jars at ross or marshalls. I use envelopes and a deposit bag which are free.

    Guess she really is not getting the Gail thing yet.
