Trying to make it all work

April 25th, 2012 at 03:20 pm

Money is all I can think about lately. I need money to work on our house. I need money to pay our bills. I need money to run our new business. I keep thinking, maybe I should get a second job. But I need time to do that and all my time goes into our business or our house and any extra goes to the family. So what do I do? Not sure what else I can cut out or do to make more room in the budget. I know things will get better at our shop....we are just putting profit into more product right now to build it up. And we are busy so I know its going good. I am just trying to make it all work.

What can you do to relieve stress? A lot of us use exercise, just a brief, brisk walk often helps sort out issues. If you prefer, use a DVD for your level of Yoga and commit 20 minutes daily. [DVDs are free at your library or inexpensive, used from an on-line seller or Craigslist.

It helps to list your projects and prioritize, which are most important, which have reasonable likelihood of success, what will reduce outflow?

I have to agree w/ snafu's second paragraph especially. Right now you have a lot of free-floating spending concerns. Part of what relieves stress is a feeling of control. think that you should list out what and your timeframe. I have to say that unless your home is unliveable, right now that's at the bottom. I would also detail your "putting profit into more product" line. Definitely buy more product if its a big seller, and prune the product if its not selling.

Yoga would be wonderful...I just haven't made any time lately for "myself."
Unfortunately the house we bought is a "fixer-upper." There are certain things that we have to do before other problems are caused. I guess I just need to list them out and price them out.

You've got a lot on your plate! I don't know beans about running a business, but it sounds like maybe your personal/household budget merges with your business budget. Do you have clarity as to how far the two of you are willing to sacrifice the household for the business, or the business for the household? I understand sometimes in the beginning one takes substantial risks with a business, but my stomach would be churning if I did not know exactly when to put the brakes on. And do the brakes go onto the house? The business? Others you employ? Your own job? I'd need to know which of these absolutely must not be allowed to sink.
