Food Inventory

August 29th, 2012 at 04:40 pm

So last night I went through my freezer and pantry and made a list of every item I had. And although I did have some stuff in my freezer and a lot of starches in the pantry, I will still have to buy some things to make meals, plus milk and produce. But I was able to cross a lot of things off the list and reduce the amount. At least I am aware of what I have and with the meals I planned, I can clear out some of the older stock.

As I said yesterday, I grew up with the mentality that you should always have food in your pantry and freezer. Just in case. I don't have tons. I don't have a stockpile like an extreme couponer (although I am impressed by them). But I always have soups, beans, some veggies, pastas, and rice; things like that. So I'm trying this to see if I can just have less. I don't ever want to be where I have to go to the grocery store because we don't have anything I can make. Plus it take me 15-18 minutes to get to the store, so I don't want to have to make extra trips.

I admire your patience to create an inventory. I try hard to track meat in the freezer with a list in a page protector taped to the door. It shows how many pkg. of chicken, pork, roasts, ground beef, lamb & fish. I do cross off ea. pkg removed with the attached Sharpie but other family never remember.

My goal is to work through foods bought for summer BBQ & visitors but not used as everyone preferred cold, salad based meals. Grateful I kept menus from last September & October. Hope Robin continues to post menus...I'm a copycat.

I have a huge inventory in the pantry and a fairly full freezer. I had decided to try a pantry/freezer clean-out, then all this talk of food prices going up, I started stocking on sale items again. I need to do a thorough inventory and eat the old stuff first, making sure I rotate. What I did do was put the new on sale items into a different cupboard in my garage so I know to go to it last!! Most of my stock is in the garage as we do not have that much space in the kitchen cupboards.

I need to work on organizing the freezer when I get home.

Okay wait, huge is not right. Extreme couponers have huge....I have a lot, but nothing like them...and yes I admire them too, but with only 2 of us, food would go well past their dates before we could use them up.

I need to do this again. At least for my freezers.
