Utility Beat Down

January 16th, 2013 at 07:28 pm

So....we had a water leak. Last month I noticed that our bill was about $20 more. We walked the house and check everything and couldn't find any leaky faucets or hoses or anything. Well that's because it was a main water line closer to the property line. Luckily my husband was able to fix it and conveniently our neighbor (and husband's best friend) does plumbing on the side, so he gave us the parts. But our water bill for this month is $70.00 MORE!! YUCK. Then I got our electric bill. HOLY SUGAR...it is $320! Last month was $158. What the heck happened? I called the electric company, they said it is our heater. So I guess I am going to have to turn it down a couple of notches. Not the happiest camper today.

What do you keep your Thermastat set at? Are you using electric blankets, extra heaters? We set ours at 69 during the day...because I stay home. At night wehne go to bed we drop it down to 62 degrees. Bundle up in sweaters when you are homing and not moving around...or get up and move around!

I keep mine set at 63-64 and wear lots of sweaters! Hoe it goes down next month!

I know that in our area people who have water leaks can approach the town/munipality/utility company and ask for a refund. Worth making a call. If you get someone who says know, ask around to other places (so if the town says no, call the utility). It will be very clear on your bill that your water use is way up and unless you've been filling your pool or something they might consider a refund. Especially since it's the main water line.

That is truly frustrating. I'm glad your DH figured it out.

I would contact the water utility as well, especially since you already made a repair (and it doesn't appear that a new swimming pool has lead to the increase!)... there should be some insurance that you don't have to pay for water that you are not actually using.
