Garden (and side note)

February 25th, 2013 at 10:12 pm

So, since we live in the country now, I am taking advantage of the land and starting a garden. It will be small...at least until I get the hang of it. I am doing:
Broccoli
Brussels Sprouts
Carrots
Herbs
Cantaloupe
Tomatoes
Peas
Garlic
Yellow Onion
Shallots
Most of these are items I buy on a weekly basis so if I can grow them myself that would be great. I started the seeds inside a couple of weeks ago and I HAVE SPROUTS. Its pretty exciting and I realized that I really enjoy it. Prepping the land, working with the soil, watching them grow. Kind of theraputic.

And today I spent $5 on something. It was a total waste of money. And I feel dumb for doing it. Why would I just waste $5 of my $11? Impulse! I've got to learn to move past the feeling. Learn to ask myself...Do I need it? Total "Doh!" moment.

What fun to start a garden from seed. Sprouts have me believing spring will really come! I'm impressed that you're doing 10 different items as once the ground allows transplants. It's nearly daily work added to your current responsibilities. Home grown produce is so much better than the stuff from the supermarket. I only do container gardening and it's fun to 'play in the dirt' as DSs identify my effort.

Whatever you spent $ 5. on, don't beat yourself up. Forgive yourself and avoid that item in the future since you feel it wasteful. If you're paid on Thursday, perhaps reduce impulse /want spending by $ 5. and add it to your coin jar or slush fund.

Wow! That actually sounds like a big garden. Good luck!

Sounds like a great garden plan.

As for the $5...well, you learned something, so it wasn't a total waste.

I love growing things. It really is therapeutic. We will be starting our seeds this weekend, mostly for peppers, herbs, peanuts, and eggplants.

Ah, gardening! I'd be much worse-off, body and soul, if I did not garden.

I found a $5 Walmart gift card. So I am going to use it towards groceries and then reduce my grocery budget by $5 to make it up. Smile
